IMPORTANT UPDATE: as of October 6, 2025 (shortly before the release of version 1.5), NitroFont is now available under the "give credit, don't share with more restrictions" license. I realized that Colombo MT-32, which I used some of the samples from, was released under CC BY-SA, so I had to change the license under which NitroFont is available, such that nothing bad happens. I apologize for any inconveniences this may have brought.

NitroFont is my attempt at creating a high-quality soundfont. While it sounds mostly realistic, the goal when creating it wasn't to make it sound so--I just wanted it to sound good on my ears, by using some of my favorite samples. And, after several days of testing the soundfont, making adjustments, and trial-and-error, this is what was achieved.

I was trying to make a high-quality soundfont as far back as 2022 (unless I'm wrong). Back then, I didn't have as many soundfont creation skills as I have today, so the soundfont I made sounded not so good. I deleted it--for good. In fact, I made multiple attempts at creating a high-quality soundfont. Many of the end results were scrapped because I couldn't achieve what I wanted to. But a few weeks ago, I made another attempt, and got satisfied with the final result in the end.

All samples were taken from other soundfonts I could reach on the Internet (particularly Polyphone and Musical Artifacts)--all of these are freely licensed AFAIK, so I had nothing to worry about. However, it's important to note that some free (as in "freedom") soundfonts have samples of dubious origin. So, if you notice a non-free sample in NitroFont, please let me know. I'll try to replace it as quickly as possible and do my best at preventing myself from getting into a legal situation.

Changelog:
  • Beta 1: Initial release.
  • Beta 2: Added the following drumsets: Room, Power, Electronic, Analog, Jazz, Brush, and Symphony. A few samples were replaced, and several unnoticeable adjustments were made.
  • 1.0: Added the SFX kit. A few samples were once again replaced; "Breath noise" was renamed to "Breathpipe" which is a more original name. Instruments that use FM-synthesized samples (this includes the clarinet, piccolo, and whistle) are clearly labeled as such.
  • 1.1: A few samples were trimmed to remove unused parts after the loop end points. "Tack piano" and "Chorused EP" now have a chorus-esque effect. Internal cleanup was also made, reducing the number of parameters defined in the instruments.
  • 1.1_1: Re-upload version of 1.1. Only the metadata was changed; no changes to how the soundfont sounds were made whatsoever.
  • 1.2: Completely reworked modulators. New samples were added, including for velocity mapping used by the mellow grand piano, hammered dulcimer, and snare drums.
  • 1.3: The mellow grand piano no longer has velocity mapping (I thought it sounded a bit off). The standard kit's snare drums no longer have velocity mapping as well, but 2 new standard kits were added, one of which replicated the old behavior. Improved breathpipe.
  • 1.4: Replaced a few samples. Atmosphere improved once again. Reverse cymbal was also improved. Acoustic guitars now have a click sound (cut noise) on release (this makes use of the experimental "play on note release" loop behavior, which may not work correctly in some MIDI synths; BassMIDI doesn't support it but it still does sound cool ).
  • 1.41: Fixed a minor oversight in the strings. Also tidied up the samples a bit. Removed the experimental guitar cut noise effect (I might want to bring it back at some point in the future).
  • 1.5: Major improvements. Most notably, the tack piano's samples were replaced, the ice rain synth (now called Krypton) has a stereo effect, strings now sound better, and bongos and congas now use samples from FluidR3. Many instruments were renamed for the sake of originality.
  • 1.51: Re-added the clicking sounds for acoustic guitars, now different than they were back in 1.4. Crash cymbals were improved a bit; also fixed a minor oversight with the surdo.
  • 1.52: Minor improvements affecting the chorused EP, Fender Stratocaster guitar, polyphonic pad, and halo pad.
  • 1.53: Minor improvements.
  • 1.54: Improved brass section and gunshot. Fixed an oversight where the applause effect in the symphonic kit wasn't stereo.
  • 2.0 beta 1: All instruments have a slight chorus effect. Replaced some samples, mostly drums but also the oboe (now called the FM oboe as a result). Added support for Roland GS, with the exception of the SFX melodic patches (they'll be added when 2.0 goes out of beta).
  • 2.0 beta 2: Fixed a few oversights (in particular, Krypton didn't play below note 12 and analog toms had no reverb or chorus effects). Made the FM oboe a tad more realistic, and replaced the samples for the xylophone with something more interesting (the same samples are used in NitroFont Mini, btw). Also replaced the claves with samples from LiteGM, which are clickier.
  • 2.0: Added SFX patches.

Hey guys! I've decided to open a dedicated GitHub repository for NitroFont! I did it so that it can become a bit more popular. Here it is: https://github.com/nitro-shoe/nitrofont  Have a nice day!

Hi. Lots of great usable sounds in this GM style set! Unique and fresh. Good additions to pianos, strings, other instruments like harmonica and dulcimer, and effects like seashore, and I like the slightly different and HQ versions of all the GM pads. I'm new to what's out there in soundfonts and some of these really round out my virtual orchestral libraries. And as always, nice and easy on the processor. Thanks. Bs.

Sorry for late reply (I didn't notice you commented), but thanks for your comment! I'm glad you like my soundfont
