    hi, I was analyzing an acoustic guitar soundfont and was wondering why the author created the preset in this way : same instrument in 5 layers with different resonance

    he did that to mimic a lower velocity (not very effective, but some people believe in limitless manipulation of a sample)

    Resonance values of 20 and 30 are far beyond what can be used on any instrument. 
    Furthermore, if such a thing is necessary, it can be achieved with a modulator rather than by setting transition values. 
    For example: A resonance value of +10 between the velocity values of 112 and 113 creates a very sharp transition.
