We have quite a handful of SONiVOX soundfonts on Polyphone and Musical Artifacts. They all recreate the capabilities of old sounds chips made for mobile devices. So, one day, I thought to myself: what if I create a SONiVOX soundfont myself? I didn't want to recreate any particular device or hardware piece, and instead, I opted for creating an original soundfont.
I gathered some of the best samples from some freely licensed SONiVOX soundfonts I could reach, and the final result is SoniFont—basically the SONiVOX EAS software synthesizer built into some Android devices, but on steroids.
This soundfont tends to sound somewhat realistic and high-quality with some MIDI files, such as Insider (one of the Roland SC-55 demo songs). At other times, it may indeed sound like an old software synthesizer. Well, I used modulators and reverb and chorus effects to sprinkle some realism into this soundfont, but some samples may reveal the true nature of SoniFont as a soundfont that occupies less than 2 MB of disk space (the frequency rate of the samples included in the soundfont vary between 8000 and 44100 Hz).
But anyway, you can now enjoy some decent-sounding SONiVOX samples out there—all packaged into a single soundfont file. Take advantage of the "sound that rocks!"
