Soundfont playing as weird squeaking noise

  when I try to play a soundfont on the virtual keyboard or in musescore, it plays as a squeak that lasts for a fraction of a second. However, when I play it in the samples tab, it sounds just fine. I haven't been able to find anything on this issue for almost a year.
